There is persistent outbreak of notifiable diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Contagious Bovine Pleuro Pneumonia (CBPP), Pestis Petit Ruminantes (PPR), African Swine Fever (ASF) and trypanosomiasis in Uganda.When disease outbreaks occur, trade of livestock and associated products is interrupted following enforcement of control mechanisms like quarantine resulting in losses along the whole value chain. This scenario warrants the need for development of economically feasible disease early warning systems and management strategies to minimize the risk of occurrence and spread of the notifiable diseases to free areas.

NaLIRRI is currently developing national disease prevalence maps and early warning models to help in predicting the occurrence of outbreaks of selected notifiable diseases in the country. The predictive models will be framed into end-user friendly software supported on Information Technology platforms. We are also in advanced stages of optimizing the Ngu-B2tsetse trap for controlling Glossinamorsitanswhich is a major tsetse fly species causing Trypanosomiasisi in the arid and semi-arid ecosystems.

It is expected that the use of the optimized Ngu-B2 trap in combination with other control strategies will reduce the burden of the G. Morsitansand other parasites by 80% in 2025.This will result in improved health of livestock and humans and raised income among the livestock keepers in Karamoja.
