Dr. Mugerwa Swidiq
Dr. Mugerwa is an accomplished innovative scientist with unrivaled publication record and has contributed enormously towards generation of novel knowledge, skills and productivity enhancing technologies. Because of his strategic and visionary thinking, commitment and willingness to share knowledge, he has significantly contributed to intellectual capacity building, strengthen research infrastructure, resource mobilization and improved accountability systems.
Dr. Mugerwa has contributed to mentorship of young scientists, interns, graduate and undergraduate students into competent and innovative research scientists and technical support staff. He has established various strategic collaborations and partnerships with international research centers, international and local development agencies, advanced laboratories, universities and private institutions. Promoted rural institutional skills and participatory approaches towards making technology innovations both relevant and useful.
He has made significant contribution towards food security and increased income through restoring the capacity of grasslands to avail adequate feed and water resources to livestock; formulation of reliable and animal- specific feed rations that satisfy the nutritional demands of livestock; development of forage management practices that have resulted into increased forage biomass production; development of feed processing equipment; and generally alleviating livestock nutrition related constraints to livestock production. He has been a key team player in planning, designing and establishing the NARO Dairy Business and Incubation Center which seeks to commercialism research products and services and train stakeholders on undertaking profitable and sustainable dairying.
He has also conducted championing research on feed safety as a means to improve performance of livestock, safety of livestock products and health of consumers of livestock products. He has designed and is currently implementing the first forage/pasture breeding program in the country in an attempt to alleviate poor forage productivity and feed scarcity. He is also currently leading the search for drought tolerance traits in forages as a means to mitigate the effects of climate change on forage production.
Currently he is venturing into plant biotechnology applications to enable the transfer of protein-synthesis traits in leguminous forages into high yielding fodder grasses to address the challenges of protein deficiency in small holder livestock production systems.
