Major Micheal Miller said that the facility (RDL) is meant to serve Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region to facilitate the enhancement of Biological Security and safety of livestock safety of livestock in Uganda especially at the time when emerging and re-merging disease outbreaks. Some of these are zoonotic and very deadly such as Ebola and Anthrax.
The US government through its Department of Defense initiated a Cooperation in Biological Engagement Program (CBEP) in Uganda. Under this program, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) was implemented. A Regional Biosafety Diagnostic Laboratory funded by DTRA was commissioned and handed over to the government on 21st May, 2019 at NaLIRRI-Nakyesasa
Director Genera-NARO Dr. Ambrose Agona representing the Minister of Agriculture Hon. Vincent Ssempija on behalf of the Ugandan government received the keys from Major Micheal Miller from the US Mission in Uganda. The high profile was attended by representatives from the US Embassy, NaLIRRI & NaCORRI staff, NAROSEC and some PARI Directors.
